Windows Easy Transfer file recovery
If you cannot open the windows easy transfer file - odds are - some of the files that got copied in are corrupted - but most of the files should be recoverable.
The first time I used the utility, Windows easy transfer files from Windows XP failed to open in Windows 7. (This was of course the only time I tried the utility, and wasn't sure if this was another BSOD screw up (and maybe lost pictures/data !@#.))
Started kicking around on the web and found MIGRECOVER - a M$ internal utility to read easy tranfer files and extract what can be salvaged.

basically - grab this archive and do the following
d/l - http://content.wuala.com/contents/peril/public/Migrecover_4.zip
1) create folder c:\temp - [md c:\temp]
2) rename your migfile to mydata.MIG and move it to c:\temp
3) create folder c:\recover - [md c:\recover]
4) extract migrecover to c:\temp
5) run CMD (Start -> All Programs -> click Accessories right click -> Command Prompt, select Run as administrator)
6) cd c:\temp\migrecover
7) migrecover.exe c:\temp\mydata.MIG c:\recover
8) Data will be extracted to c:\recover
Hope this helps - it saved my bacon.
